- Parents’ Priorities: During this crisis, his parents came to Christian faith. His mother prioritized his spiritual well-being over his career, telling the dean: “It is not important that Christopher becomes a dentist; what’s more important is that Christopher becomes a Christ follower.”
- Arrest and Conversion: After seven years of his mother’s fervent prayers, he was arrested by federal agents and faced a life sentence for drug charges. While in the detention center, he was overwhelmed by his mother’s unconditional love and found a Gideon’s New Testament.
- Finding Hope in Hardship: He was later diagnosed as HIV positive. In his despair, a passage written on his cell bunk (Jeremiah 29:11) gave him hope, leading to his eventual conversion and call to ministry.
Theological Framework for “Holy Sexuality”
After his conversion, Yuan studied the Bible and rejected theological views that affirmed same-sex relationships. He developed the following framework:
- Identity is in Christ Alone: A person’s identity should not be defined by their sexuality (gay, ex-gay, or heterosexual) but must be grounded in Jesus Christ Alone. Unconditional love from God does not equate to unconditional approval of sinful behavior.
- The Opposite of Sin is Holiness: The ultimate goal for all Christians is not heterosexuality, but Holiness. The opposite of homosexuality—or any other sin—is Holiness, which is expressed through chastity in singleness or faithfulness in marriage.
- Critique of Identity as Essence: Yuan argues that the modern error is equating a sexual desire or feeling (“I feel gay”) with personal essence (“I am gay”). When a person is told “what you do is sin,” they hear “who I am is reprehensible.”
- Critique of Side B/Spiritual Friendship: He rejects the “Side B” movement, which promotes celibate same-sex “spiritual friendships.” He argues this fails to call people to true repentance, which includes the desires (lust) as taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
- The Answer to “Born Gay”: Regardless of whether a person believes they were born with same-sex attraction, the biblical answer is simple: “You must be born again.”
Conclusion
